The Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services ensures that Ontario’s communities are supported and protected by law enforcement and that the public safety and correctional systems are safe, secure, efficient and accountable.

The ministry operates provincial correctional institutions for adult offenders, 18 years of age and over, who are serving a sentence of up to two years less a day or who are awaiting judicial proceedings and are remanded into custody. When an offender is sentenced to two years or more, he/she serves his/her time in a federal institution operated by Correctional Service Canada.

The ministry also provides community supervision of persons on probation, serving a conditional sentence or on provincial parole.

The Ministry of Correctional Services Act mandates the following program areas:

  • Training, treatment and services
  • Programs for rehabilitation
  • Prevention of crime.

Programs for rehabilitation, which include literacy, are intended to create a social environment in which inmates and offenders are given opportunities for successful personal and social adjustment.
