Initial assessment

The first step in working with a learner is to identify what they do and do not know to determine the appropriate level of tutoring. An Initial Literacy Assessment has been developed to help tutors understand the knowledge, aptitude and skills a learner possesses.

The learner’s ability to read the assessment information (name, address, etc.), respond in sentences to questions and complete simple math shows the tutor what areas should be focused on for improvement. Learning is more meaningful when it relates to interests and goals.

The initial assessment is provided in the Volunteer Literacy Tutor Handbook and is the starting point when working with correctional clients. This handbook also provides links to additional assessment instruments that can be used to refine problematic literacy and numeracy issues.
